Spills & Skills: Non-Emergency Hazmat Spill Response

Watch the video for a preview of the training.

Course Overview

Anyone working around hazardous materials is likely to come upon an accidental spill or leak of hazardous materials or wastes. This Video On Demand provides training to help employees assess whether to report the spill to the emergency coordinator or safety specialist, or attempt to clean up the discharge personally. This video provides an outline for decision making, beginning with the discovery of a release and assessing the seriousness of a spill. The video provides step-by-step instruction on how to stop a spill from spreading, how to absorb the discharge, how to remove the absorbent and how to dispose of the clean-up materials. Proper use of personal protective equipment, the role of material safety data sheets and the site's hazard communication plan are highlighted. Hazmat workers who are trained in spill response techniques and know how to assess whether to clean up an accidental spill or to call for assistance are able to better protect themselves, their co-workers, the environment and the organization.
