MaxIT · Beyond the LMS · AbilityCompetency

Know who is ready.
Understand the evidence.

AbilityCompetency is MaxIT’s competency management system, built around clear rules, relevant evidence and human judgment. Connect development conversations to what people can demonstrate, and keep important decisions understandable.

For learning leaders, managers and operations teams · Built to complement existing learning environments

The business problem

A completed course is useful evidence. What does it prove?

Workforce readiness depends on more than a certificate. Learning leaders need to agree who can assess a skill, which evidence matters, how long it remains valid, and when a qualified person must confirm the result.

01

Give human judgment a place

Supervisor observations, procedural sign-offs and manager ratings belong alongside assessment scores and other learning evidence.

02

Keep decisions explainable

A competency decision should have a clear reason and a connection to the evidence behind it, so people can understand and challenge it.

03

Plan for reassessment

Competence can change as procedures evolve, certifications lapse or new observations reveal a development need.

A practical approach

What principles guide AbilityCompetency?

01

Relevant evidence

Use observations and human ratings alongside learning activity and assessments.

02

Qualified assessors

Consider who is qualified to rate the skill, and use calibration to strengthen consistency.

03

Current capability

Define recency, expiry, reassessment and revocation rules alongside achievement.

04

Human oversight

Use simple, explainable rules and qualified human confirmation where the stakes require it.

Fit for your environment

Build a framework people can actually use.

MaxIT’s approach starts with a manageable set of competencies and understandable evidence rules. The aim is a working process that supports real decisions, rather than a framework too elaborate to maintain.

  • Define the capability required for a role or task
  • Agree who can assess it and what counts as evidence
  • Set practical conditions for achievement and reassessment
  • Match the level of human oversight to the significance of the decision

Questions, answered

What should you know about AbilityCompetency?

What is competency management?

Competency management defines the capabilities people need, the evidence used to assess them, and the rules for recognizing and maintaining proficiency. It connects learning with demonstrated ability.

How is AbilityCompetency different from completion tracking?

Completion tracking records a learning event. AbilityCompetency addresses the broader question of whether evidence supports a competency decision, including human judgment and the conditions for reassessment.

Do human observations count?

Human ratings and observations are central to MaxIT’s design approach. A supervisor’s observation or qualified assessor’s sign-off can carry information that a course score alone cannot provide.

Can competency expire?

Yes, the framework must account for evidence becoming outdated, procedures changing and reassessment being required. Discuss the expiry and review workflow for your use case in a demo.

Can we keep our current LMS?

The MaxIT approach is LMS-agnostic. We will review the evidence sources, integration options and workflow for your existing environment rather than assume that every platform connects in the same way.
